The 5 steps to return to duty
1) Initial SAP Evaluation
A DOT-qualified SAP evaluates your situation and provides written recommendations required by the DOT process.
2) Complete Recommendations
You complete education or treatment recommendations as required. This is where many delays happen if the wrong provider is chosen.
3) Follow-Up SAP Evaluation
After completing recommendations, the SAP confirms compliance and prepares the next required documentation.
4) Return-to-Duty Test
Your employer or program schedules the DOT return-to-duty test. A negative result is required before returning to safety-sensitive work.
5) Follow-Up Testing Plan
Once you return, follow-up testing continues as required. The plan is part of ongoing DOT compliance.
